The Complete Guide to Car Detailing on the Costa Blanca

Owning a car on the Costa Blanca comes with unique challenges that most Northern European drivers have never encountered. The combination of environmental factors here creates one of the most demanding climates for vehicle paintwork in Europe.

The Costa Blanca’s Unique Threats to Car Paint

UV Radiation

The Costa Blanca receives around 300 days of sunshine per year, with UV levels in summer that far exceed what most Northern European cars were engineered to handle. Unprotected paint oxidises and fades significantly faster here than in the UK, Germany or the Netherlands.

Saharan Dust (Calima)

Several times a year, winds from North Africa deposit fine red-orange dust across the Costa Blanca. This dust is mildly abrasive and, when combined with morning dew, forms a thin acidic slurry that sits on paint. Washing it off incorrectly — wiping a dry car — causes micro-scratches across the entire surface.

Sea Salt

Living within 10–15km of the coast means constant low-level salt deposition on your car. Salt accelerates oxidation on exposed metal edges and causes significant corrosion on brake components and wheel nuts. It also bonds to paint and, if not removed properly, slowly degrades clear coat.

Pine Resin and Sap

The Costa Blanca’s abundant pine trees produce resin and sap that falls on parked cars. Pine sap is highly acidic and, if left on paint in warm weather, can etch through clear coat within 24–48 hours.

The Right Maintenance Routine for Costa Blanca Conditions

Washing

Two-bucket hand wash method using a quality car shampoo is the minimum standard. Never wipe a dry car, especially after calima. Rinse first, always. pH-neutral shampoos are essential — dishwashing liquid strips waxes and can accelerate paint deterioration.

Decontamination

Every 3–6 months, your car needs a full clay bar decontamination to remove embedded tar, iron particles from brake dust, and road grime that regular washing cannot remove. Skip this and all your other protection products sit on a contaminated surface where they are less effective.

Protection

At minimum: a quality carnauba wax or paint sealant every 3 months. Better: a ceramic coating (one application, 3–10 years of protection). Best: PPF for impact protection + ceramic coating for chemical protection.

Professional Detailing Services Worth Booking

At Garaje Royal, we recommend booking a professional detail at least once a year — ideally twice, before and after the summer season when UV damage and calima are at their worst. Our annual maintenance clients consistently show the best-preserved paintwork even after 5+ years on the Costa Blanca.
